Introduction
Since the tragic murder of Mahsa Amini by Iran’s morality police, women in Iran have been at the forefront of a revolutionary movement known as the Woman, Life, Freedom Movement. This movement aims to challenge the oppressive regime led by Ayatollah Khamenei and protest against laws such as the “mandatory hijab” that require women to cover their hair. Mahsa Amini’s murder was a result of her showing a few strands of hair, which sparked global outrage. In a remarkable display of solidarity, PaykanArtCar, a nonprofit organization, has partnered with renowned Iranian artist Simin Keramati to launch the 2023 edition of its art car in support of this movement.
Preserving National Pride with Paykan
The Paykan, Iran’s first automobile, holds a special place in the hearts of Iranians as a symbol of national pride. Although it is no longer in production, Paykan cars remain a ubiquitous presence on the streets of Tehran and throughout Iran. PaykanArtCar harnesses the power of art and the talent of Iranian artists to transform this iconic vehicle into a canvas for human rights causes.
A Glimpse into the Past
In 2021, PaykanArtCar collaborated with artist Alireza Shojaian to launch its first art car, dedicated to raising awareness about LGBTQ+ rights in Iran. Shojaian’s powerful depictions drew attention to the harsh treatment of the LGBTQ+ community in Iran and earned the 2021 PaykanArtCar the Vaclav Havel Prize for Creative Dissent.
Simin Keramati’s Vision
For the 2023 edition of PaykanArtCar, the organization joined forces with the accomplished Iranian-Canadian artist Simin Keramati. Keramati’s work focuses on the global solidarity of women cutting their hair in support of Iranian women who are forced to wear the hijab. This striking artwork incorporates real human hair to adorn a 1970 model Paykan, creating a visceral and thought-provoking symbol of protest.
Championing Women’s Rights
The repression of women in Iran is severe, with even a few strands of hair exposed outside the hijab leading to arrest, imprisonment, torture, and death. However, the women of Iran have demonstrated immense courage by protesting against the regime’s oppressive laws, which restrict their freedom and choices.
Global Solidarity
Women worldwide have rallied behind the Women, Life, Freedom Movement in Iran. Prominent diaspora leader Masih Alinejad, founder of the NGO My Stealthy Freedom, has teamed up with PaykanArtCar to support this cause. The global community’s solidarity is crucial in addressing the gender apartheid regime in Tehran.
Unveiling in Oslo
PaykanArtCar unveiled Simin Keramati’s artwork in Oslo, Norway, on June 13, 2023, coinciding with the start of the Oslo Freedom Forum. This high-profile event drew attention to the plight of Iranian women and the global need for support in their struggle for freedom and rights.
The Message of Resistance
Céline Assaf-Boustani, President of the Human Rights Foundation, praised PaykanArtCar’s creative approach in highlighting the Women, Life, Freedom revolution. She emphasized the importance of global support for the people of Iran, who are striving for democracy and human rights.
Continuing the Movement
PaykanArtCar’s mission is far from over. The art car will continue to be featured and exhibited worldwide, serving as a symbol of resistance and a reminder of the ongoing struggle for women’s rights in Iran.
Conclusion
Simin Keramati’s powerful artwork on the PaykanArtCar is a testament to the resilience and determination of Iranian women and their global supporters. By using art as a medium for protest and solidarity, PaykanArtCar shines a spotlight on the ongoing fight for women’s rights in Iran and encourages the international community to stand with those who are working tirelessly for change.
