Rajasthan Introduces 100-Day Employment Scheme for Folk Artists: Mukhyamantri Lok Kalakar Protsahan Yojana-2023

Rajasthan’s Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has recently introduced a pioneering initiative called the “Mukhyamantri Lok Kalakar Protsahan Yojana-2023” to provide guaranteed employment opportunities to folk artists in the state. Taking inspiration from the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), this scheme aims to support and promote the rich cultural heritage of Rajasthan by offering local folk artists a chance to perform in their respective areas for a period of 100 days.

Under the scheme, which falls under the Art, Literature, and Culture department, folk artists will have the opportunity to showcase their art and talents at various events and venues, such as state-sponsored programs, festivals, fairs, ceremonies, schools, and colleges. The program aims to provide employment to folk artists by allowing each family to perform for 100 days per year. By dedicating themselves to preserving and sharing their artistic traditions, these artists will contribute to the cultural vibrancy of Rajasthan.

Dr. BD Kalla, the Minister of Art and Culture, emphasised that Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot is deeply committed to supporting and promoting folk art in Rajasthan, making this scheme a visionary project. While the specific remuneration for the artists has not been disclosed, the registration form for the scheme mentions that the artists may also be involved in disseminating information about government schemes, highlighting the potential for wider engagement and impact.

To facilitate the implementation of the scheme, the Art, Literature, and Culture department has initiated a registration process. As there is no reliable data on the number of folk artists in the state, this step is crucial to identify and reach out to the deserving beneficiaries. Folk artists interested in participating in the scheme must apply for registration with the department. Their status as folk artists will be certified by local authorities, including the Sarpanch (village head), Patwari (revenue officer), and village development officer. Additionally, the artists are required to submit a two-minute performance video along with their application, allowing the authorities to assess their skills and artistic abilities.

By providing employment opportunities to folk artists, the Mukhyamantri Lok Kalakar Protsahan Yojana-2023 not only aims to preserve and promote Rajasthan’s cultural heritage but also contributes to poverty alleviation and sustainable development. It recognises the invaluable role that folk artists play in society, acting as custodians of traditional art forms and cultural expressions that have been passed down through generations.

Through this visionary initiative, Rajasthan’s government demonstrates its commitment to uplifting and supporting local artists, ensuring that their artistry and contributions are acknowledged and valued. By providing a platform for folk artists to showcase their talents, the scheme strengthens the cultural fabric of Rajasthan and encourages the younger generation to appreciate and carry forward these artistic traditions.

The Mukhyamantri Lok Kalakar Protsahan Yojana-2023 stands as a testament to Rajasthan’s dedication to preserving its rich cultural heritage and supporting the livelihoods of its folk artists. By guaranteeing 100 days of employment to these artists, the government not only provides them with a platform to showcase their talents but also ensures the continuity and flourishing of traditional art forms for future generations to enjoy. This scheme represents a significant step towards recognising the immense cultural and economic value that folk artists bring to the state of Rajasthan.
