Recycle and Upcycle Daily Plastic Trash into Plastic Plant Pots

While buying our groceries or stationeries, even though we are aware of the products we just bought, we are negligent towards their plastic cover. Plastic surrounds us. In a study conducted by Environmental Action (EA), it was observed that the plastic waste in 2023 equated to 158 million tonnes. Out of this, only 15% is recycled; the other 85% ends up in the oceans or landfills. If this continues, our environment will suffer gravely. Hence, it is of utmost importance to recycle our plastic products to leave a better planet for the next generation. But how can we; the ordinary people, reduce plastic waste? The simple answer is upcycling. Whether it is the plastic waste from carry bags or water bottles, all of them can be upcycled. One of the best ways to do so is to make plastic plant pots.

How to Make Plant Pots from Plastic Bottles

If you open your refrigerator right now, you will find at least one plastic bottle. Rather than putting them in the trash, you can turn them into plastic pots for plants. It will ensure that they don’t harm our environment while elevating the beauty of your house. These plastic plant pots are quite easy to make and can be made out of plastic bottles, which serve as beautiful indoor plastic pots for plants, or huge plastic buckets great for outdoor plants.

  • Plastic bottles/containers
  • Paper cutter
  • Paint and paintbrush
  • Other decorations (googly eyes/ ribbons/ ropes/ fabrics/ rhinestones)
  • Soil
  • Screwdriver

How to Make Plant Pots From Plastic Containers in 3 Easy Steps

Decorating your home doesn’t have to be a hassle. If you have several plastic bottles lying around, you can transform them into plastic pots for plants with the following steps.

STEP 1: Prepare the Plastic Bottle

Using a cutter, cut the plastic bottle into half or about two-thirds of the bottom. If you wish to use the entire frame of the bottle, cut out a small section from the middle. You may use a marker to plan out the incision and then cut the bottle. Heat the screwdriver and poke two or three holes at the bottom. This will increase the efficiency of water drainage. You can even use the top part of the bottle. The nozzle will act as a de facto hole in this case.

STEP 2: Paint the Bottle

While the cut-up bottle will act as a nice enough conduit for the plant, decorating it will increase its beauty. You may paint it any colour you like. You may even draw varied designs on it. Don’t forget to paint the inside as well. Leave the paint to dry.

STEP 3: Pot The Plant

Now that your plastic plant pot is ready, all you need to do is place the plant in it. Start with a base layer of gravel, but do not go heavy. Once you have set the gravel layer, you may add the soil. If you are planning to plant a cactus, then any dry soil will work. However, if you wish to grow a plant from scratch, we will advise you to mix soil with organic manure. Set your plant or seed in the soil. Now add at least 1-2 cm of soil mixture.

And voila, your plastic plant pots are ready to be placed. You may use them as centrepieces or place them around the house or on your balcony. Another great idea would be to make macrame pot holders to hang them from the ceiling.

How to Decorate Plastic Plant Pots

If painting the plastic pots for plants is not enough, you may even make them into several designs. Here are some of the plastic plant pot design ideas that will take your normal plastic bottles one step further.

Animal Aesthetics

Before cutting your plastic bottles, you can design them to resemble animals. Outline using a marker and then cut them. Adhere to the colour scheme of the animal. For example, if you are making them into the shape of a rabbit, outline the ears and then cut them. You may paint them in any colour, but the combination of pink and white is effervescent. You may add decoration to these plastic plant pots in the form of feet or hands. Don’t forget the googly eyes.

Rustic Ropes

Once you have painted a design, you may decorate it with a jute rope. It will give the plastic plant pots a rustic and vintage vibe. Instead of painting it, you may choose to cover the entire surface with a rope. These pots will look great with the macrame pot holder.

Fabric Frenzy

If you have old clothes, you can cut them out and stick them to the plastic plant pots to create unique designs. If you have several cloth scraps at your disposal, layer them or braid them to make an avant-garde masterpiece.
