The Roy Lichtenstein Foundation has donated around 186 works of the late artist and other materials to many institutions ahead of the Pop Artist’s 100th Birth Anniversary in October.
Many renowned institutions such as Albertina in Vienna, The Colby College of Museum Art in Waterville, Maine,The Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, Los Angeles County Museum and The Whitney Museum of Art in NewYork.
Many paintings, printworks, archival material, drawings and sculptures shall be distributed amongst the 5 institutions. The Whitney Museum is already home to many iconic prints of the late pop artist and shall now receive more than 60 pieces of the artist from the foundation.
The Albertina in Vienna has already received many woodworks, lithographs and other works from the foundation over the years and they have been exhibited at the centre, the new collection of arts will now serve as a central theme for a grand celebration that is currently being planned by the institution for 2024.
Colby College of Museum Art has received sculpture, paintings and paper works while Nasher Museum of Art at the Duke University has received 2 paper works, paintings and one sculpture as well. The Log Angeles County Museum is working on a film project and Lichtenstein’s 70 pieces shall be a part of that film called Three Landscapes.
The foundation is marking Lichtenstein’s 100th birth anniversary by donating his important pieces to important institutions and has also advised US portal services for a series of commemorative stamps including his iconic symbols and works.
The Museums and Institutions anticipate that these donations by the Foundation shall advance their mission to educate the masses on great art and artists, it shall open new possibilities for multidisciplinary practices and learnings of art and lead to better public engagement.
