‘Run As Slow As You Can’: TOILETPAPER’s Immersive Art Exhibition Makes India Debut at NMACC, Curated by Nita Ambani

Renowned Italian creative studio TOILETPAPER, founded by Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari in 2010, is set to make its India debut with the immersive visual art exhibition ‘Run As Slow As You Can.’ The exhibition will be brought to India by businesswoman Nita Ambani and will be hosted at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC) in Mumbai. Following the success of the first visual art exhibit Sangam/Confluence, this marks the second show at the newly launched cultural center. Curated by Mafalda Millies and Roya Sachs of TRIADIC, the exhibition is TOILETPAPER’s largest show to date and also serves as Cattelan and Ferrari’s first exhibition in India. The exhibition is scheduled to run from July 22 to October 22 at NMACC’s Art House.

The immersive display of ‘Run As Slow As You Can’ presents the ever-evolving, oversaturated, and hyperreal universe created by Cattelan and Ferrari. It seamlessly blends commercial photography with a surrealist approach, drawing inspiration from popular culture, advertising, religious iconography, and art history. The exhibition investigates the current phenomenon of hyper-consumption of images with a delightful dose of irony.

The exhibition is divided into four chapters that challenge our existence and engagement in an increasingly virtual world where we are constantly bombarded with visual stimuli. Through photography, design, and architecture, Cattelan and Ferrari provoke contemplation about our homes, possessions, and the people around us. Reliance Retail Director Isha Ambani, dedicated to showcasing the best of India and the world, expressed her excitement about bringing this unique exhibition to the country. She highlighted the exhibition’s playful and youthful nature, pushing the boundaries of art with its fresh and innovative approach. Ambani believes that ‘Run As Slow As You Can’ will resonate with the younger Indian audience and offer them a new perspective on art that sparks imagination and creativity.

As an institution dedicated to showcasing the best of India and the world, the NMACC aims to make art accessible to all. Entry to the exhibition is free for children below the age of seven, senior citizens, and art students. In addition to the exhibition, the Art House at NMACC will offer various visitor programming designed to inspire creativity and foster an interest in the arts. This includes family and children’s workshops, curated walkthroughs, artist talks, screenings, and more.

The NMACC is also hosting a children’s festival, #NMACCBACHPAN, which will run for 11 days. As part of the festival, the live-action rendition of the famous series ‘PAW Patrol Live – Race to the Rescue’ will be showcased, providing entertainment and engaging experiences for young visitors.

The desi premiere of ‘Run As Slow As You Can’ at NMACC not only adds to the vibrant art scene in India but also offers an opportunity for art enthusiasts to explore the unique and thought-provoking creations of TOILETPAPER. With its playful and unconventional approach, the exhibition aims to challenge perceptions, ignite imagination, and encourage a deeper appreciation for contemporary art. By making art accessible and engaging for all, NMACC continues to contribute to the cultural landscape of India, nurturing creativity and artistic expression.
