Science and Technology Folk Festival ‘Reasons to Celebrate’ to Take Place at Indian Institute of Science

The Indian Institute of Science is set to host the innovative ‘Reasons to Celebrate’ festival, focusing on science and technology through the lens of folk arts. Organised by Bachelor of Science (Research) and BTech undergraduate students as part of their humanities course “Mapping India with the Folk Arts,” the festival will occur on Saturday from 10 AM to 12 noon at the TMC ground opposite SBI on the campus in Mumbai.

Dr. Bitasta Das, Senior Editorial Assistant at the Office of Communications and Instructor-Humanities at the UG Programme, spearheads the event, now in its tenth edition. Dr. Das explains, “Every year, we explore a different art form. This year, our focus is on folk festivals, aiming to grasp the diversity and richness of India’s cultural tapestry.” She emphasises the significance of understanding folk festivals across India in comprehending the nation and its people.

The festival will feature various folk performances such as Bhuta Kola, Koli dance, Nautanki, and Nukkad Natak, typically associated with India’s vibrant folk traditions. However, these performances will be utilized to discuss the role of science and technology in preserving nature and its contributions to society. Dr. Das remarks, “We are taking a unique approach by juxtaposing science and technology with traditional Indian folk art, offering attendees a fresh perspective on these subjects.”

The event welcomes all interested individuals, and admission is free of charge. For inquiries, individuals are encouraged to reach out to Dr. Bitasta Das via email at bitasta@iisc.ac.in.
