These remarkable artworks, expected to fetch substantial prices, serve as a testament to the significant contributions these artists have made to the field.

The name Francis Newton Souza evokes curiosity and fascination among art enthusiasts and critics. Considered a historic figure in Indian contemporary art, his works have commanded attention and admiration. In a previous auction, a rare Souza painting titled ‘Girl in a Yellow Sweater’ was sold for a staggering Rs 14.4 crore to a secretive art collector.

The AstaGuru auction, scheduled for June 20, will showcase six of Souza’s works, including his iconic head imagery. Additionally, the auction will feature a landscape oil painting by Lancelot Ribeiro and two pieces by Laxman Pai. The collection also includes artworks by M.F. Hussain, with a portrait of Pal executed by K.K. Hebbar.

The demand for Souza’s artworks stems from his extraordinary artistic vision, unparalleled talent, and his prominent status in the history and discourse of modern Indian art. Sunny Chandiramani, Senior Vice President at AstaGuru, expressed that collectors recognise the profound significance of owning a Souza masterpiece, as it represents a cherished piece of India’s artistic heritage. Consequently, enthusiastic bidding and a remarkable appreciation in value are expected for the exceptional artworks by Souza and his fellow Goan artists at this upcoming auction. The base price for Souza’s renowned ‘Head’ series artwork is set at Rs 60 lakh.

Art critic and historian Uma Nair highlighted the significance of Laxman Pai, a veteran abstractionist known for his profound substance and brilliant colour contexts. Nair commended the arduous hours of labor and passion that set these artists apart. Furthermore, Nair acknowledged AstaGuru’s history of setting records within the art market, adding to the anticipation surrounding the upcoming auction.

The inclusion of artworks by these influential Goan artists not only demonstrates their individualistic and boundary-pushing approaches but also reflects their dedication to their craft. Their creations are imbued with intricate details, distorted faces, and the brilliance of colour complexities, captivating the audience with their artistic prowess.

With the Collectors’ Choice Modern Art Auction serving as a platform for these masterpieces, art collectors and enthusiasts have a unique opportunity to acquire these prized artworks that hold both cultural and historical significance. The auction not only provides a chance to own a piece of India’s artistic heritage but also signifies a celebration of the exceptional talents and contributions of these Goan artists to the world of modern art.
