We all know that Kashmir has a rich heritage of artistic handicrafts, with a special focus on the creation of exquisitely detailed and artistic hand-embroidered textile. This age-old tradition not only holds cultural significance but also plays a pivotal role in the economic livelihood of the local population. The region is renowned for its vibrant embroidery, adorning a diverse array of garments and materials such as crewel fabrics, shawls, jackets, and more. Artisans proficient in various embroidery techniques contribute to this craft, with the celebrated ‘sozni’ needlepoint embroidery style, colloquially known as Sozan Kaari, standing out as particularly distinguished.
For over five centuries, Kashmiri artisans have been dedicated to the craft of sozni embroidery. A captivating facet of sozni lies in its remarkable intricacy, spanning from five stitches per centimeter to an astonishing 500 stitches per centimeter. This unparalleled artistry distinguishes itself as one of the world’s most refined and intricate manual embroidery styles, unique to this region and unparalleled in its beauty. The primary materials employed are wool and silk, with pashmina cashmere shawls and jackets being the prime canvases for the renowned sozni embroidery.
Pashmina, a precious natural offering, finds its essence entwined with the intricate practice of sozni. Within these fragile and splendid shawls, a preference for more delicate embroideries emerges, harmonizing seamlessly with the art of Sozni Kari. While cotton threads form the backbone of Sozni, occasional dalliances with silk occur, employing fine needles to delicately sew motifs onto the fabric’s canvas.In the Sozni Shawl Baafii technique, the pivotal role of block printing unfolds; the carved designs on the wooden blocks are suggestive of exquisite artistry. The patterns frequently encompass elements like lotus blooms, geometric intricacies, floral entwining, and the classic paisley motifs. Seasoned woodcarvers, specialized in shawl design, adeptly wield traditional manual instruments to etch and emboss the design onto wooden blocks, a blueprint often stemming from the creative hands of the naqqash – an artisan proficient in the decorative arts and ornamental craftsmanship.
Diverse motifs grace these shawls, ranging from time-honored patterns like the Badum (almond), often recognized as paisley, to avian depictions including parrots, canaries, and woodpeckers. Nature’s influence comes alive through marigold, daffodil, and Chinar leaf motifs, painted with abstract strokes of color. Once the design attains approval, it proceeds into the hands of the artisan, who brings the embroidery to life, meticulously adhering to the sanctioned hues. The completed shawl then undergoes a ritualistic cleansing, entrusted to a specialist who bathes it in spring water, rhythmically striking the fabric against a polished stone.
Shawls are further categorized into diverse types like Jamawar, Jaaldar, Dorredar, Palldar, and more, distinguished by the intricacy of their needlework. Adorning these exquisite shawls, women elegantly drape them over their arms, shoulders, and occasionally their heads. Across time, this ancient craft has not only sustained artisans’ livelihoods but has also stood as a symbol of the Kashmir Valley’s opulent heritage, a tribute to its magnificence and allure.
The art of sozni embroidery involves several distinct stitching techniques, each contributing to the overall beauty of the design. The first technique, known as the exquisite sozni stitch, employs a deeper shade of thread to outline the pattern, followed by using a different color of the same delicate sozni stitch to fill in the design. This meticulous process results in a seamless blend of the filling and outline, creating a luxuriously compact effect without visible gaps. Moreover, motifs are often enriched with multiple layers of colors, and tiny contrasting stitches skillfully depict the spaces around the motifs. Reserved for premium materials like silk, genuine pashmina wool, and crepe, this technique imparts a refined and opulent appearance to the final product. Another approach involves combining various sozni threads for outlining, complemented by larger stitches like satin stitch for filling, resulting in a less intricate yet visually appealing style. Additionally, vatachikan stitches occasionally come into play, adding richness to the fillings. In this method, larger herringbone or buttonhole stitches find their purpose in embellishing the open curved or straight areas between distinct patterns, adding depth and texture to the embroidery.
Many people within the vallery are involved in the art of sozni embroidery, one such man is Ghulam Mustafa Mir, a seasoned craftsman who holds the esteemed title of “Sozni Maestro of Kashmir.” For seven decades, he has devotedly imparted his skills, nurturing countless individuals in the craft. Mir’s exceptional artistry has not only graced national and international stages but has also served as a representative of Kashmir’s distinctive creative legacy.Originating from the Sonapah region within Budgam district of central Kashmir, Mir possesses profound expertise in Sozni embroidery designs and exceptional color pairings. Currently, he serves as an instructor under the Handicrafts department, dedicating his skills to train 60 young women as part of the Samarth Training Program 2020-21.“I was engaged into this profession since my childhood and at 15, I formally started working as an artisan with dexterity, devotion, and responsibility towards his artistic abilities and traditional business,” vetran artist, Mir stated in a daily called Rising Kashmir.
Dedicating his entire life to preserving heritage and fostering positive progress within Kashmiri society, Mir has left an indelible mark. His contributions to the craft have not only elevated the field but have also positioned India on the world map of exemplary artistry. In recognition of his exceptional work, he was bestowed with the National Award in 2013 by former President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, during the Shilp Guru Award ceremony. This honor was conferred as part of the National Award to Master Craftspersons for the years 2012-14, an event orchestrated by the Ministry of Textiles in December 2015. Mir’s impact extends far beyond his artistic prowess, as his efforts have significantly empowered women and marginalized segments of society. Since 1970, he has orchestrated free training sessions, becoming a guiding light for countless individuals. His influence resonates particularly with the unemployed youth hailing from regions like Sonapah, Beerwah, Attina, Hayatpora, Sodipora, and their surroundings. Mir not only imparts skills but also paves the path to dignified livelihoods, establishing himself as an inspiration for positive change.
