Mrs Nita Ambani, Founder and Chairperson of Reliance Foundation, has always had a deep passion and admiration for Indian art and culture, and she has gone above and beyond to promote it on multiple platforms. Mrs Ambani has taken centre stage at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre in Mumbai, where she recently displayed the breathtaking artistry of Shri Ramji and Shri Mohammed Haroon in Banarasi weaving. Mrs Ambani has a profound interest in supporting ancient Indian art forms.

These talented artists have had the chance to interact directly with guests through the Swadesh exhibition, a project organised by Mrs Ambani, providing an immersive experience that honours the nation’s cultural legacy. The artists have impressed multitudes through their work and Mrs Ambani’s invaluable support in reviving India’s artistic tradition.

The art of Banarasi weaving, famed for its elaborate patterns and opulent fabrics, is at the centre of India’s textile legacy. Beautiful sarees, luxurious gowns, and gorgeous upholstery are just a few examples of how this esteemed art form manifests itself, capturing the attention of art lovers everywhere. Banarasi weaves frequently have nature-inspired designs, such as floral patterns, foliage, and animals, embellished with pure gold and silver zari. The Banaras saree is known for its unusual and alluring ways, including Bel, Kalga, Jaal, Shikargah and Koniya.

Shri Ramji, a seasoned master weaver, is from the little town of Sarai Mohana, close to Varanasi, and is known for his extraordinary skills in the art form. Shri Ramji started his journey into Banarasi silk weaving at a young age after becoming fascinated by his father’s artistic talent. He has mastered complex art and evolved into a mentor to aspiring weavers due to his unshakable dedication and genuine passion for maintaining the trade. Shri Ramji recently taught 75 women, assuring the continuation of this ancient art form in response to the demand for long-term employment. Shri Ramji’s goal of preserving and promoting Banarasi weaving has gained notoriety thanks to Mrs Ambani’s persistent support, creating a transformational platform.

Shri Mohammed Haroon is a Kaman Gadha, Varanasi resident who started his creative career at 15. He adopted weaving as a method of survival after his father passed away suddenly. Shri Haroon perfected his weaving techniques and mastered the trade with unmatched determination and unyielding resolve. He is an expert at setting up looms and skilfully weaving the fabric of dreams today, standing as a pillar in the industry. In addition to showcasing Shri Haroon’s artistic talent, the Swadesh movement has cleared the path to reviving ancient art forms. His connection to Mrs Ambani’s vision has given his trade new life, revitalised interest and drawn aspiring weavers to the art form.

Traditional art forms have significantly benefited from Mrs Nita Ambani’s unrelenting dedication to advancing India’s cultural history. She has provided talented craftspeople a forum to display their fantastic skill through projects like the Swadesh exhibition, strengthening the bond between art and its lovers.
