The Art of RK Laxman in 10 Pictures

Indian cartoonist, illustrator, and humorist RK Laxman was a renowned artist. When Laxman was a student at Maharaja College in Mysore, he started drawing stories written by his older brother, R. K. Narayan, for The Hindu. This was the beginning of his voyage into the worlds of art and satire. In the beginning, he wrote for publications like Blitz and Swarajya, as well as newspapers like Rohan.

Working for M. Shivaram’s Kannada humour magazine Koravanji helped to further develop Laxman’s talent. His full-time career as a political cartoonist began when he joined The Free Press Journal in Mumbai, which was a turning point. His five decades of service at The Times of India, Mumbai, beginning in 1951, cemented his reputation. Laxman’s most famous creation was the “Common Man” character, a silent observer of the democracy’s evolution. Laxman’s influence can be seen in his parodies, TV shows such as “Malgudi Days,” and his hilarious mascot “Gattu” for Asian Paints Ltd. His art is still relevant today as evidence of India’s political satire scene.
