The game’s unique blend of artistry and gameplay has captivated audiences. Naoum’s creation invites players to step into the iris of painter Claude Monet. As they navigate through a world painted with emotion and beauty, players are challenged by ingenious puzzles that push the boundaries of traditional game mechanics. The fusion of art and puzzle-solving creates an immersive experience that stimulates both the mind and the senses.

“The Master’s Pupil” emphasizes the staggering timeframe required to bring this opus to life. The backdrop of the game is Monet’s Life, the painter who developed cataracts in the later stages of his life. The players see the game via the lenses of Monet’s life and the hurdles faced by the artist in his lifetime, i.e. loss of his wife and impaired vision etc.

The game is hand painted and digitally imported via film scanner sheet-by-sheet. The creator believes that the hand-painted aspect of the game brings more realism to the gaming experience by providing blemishes that are lacking in digital or animated artworks. The creator not only spent years painting the game backdrop but also spent 3 years of his life learning to code and other aspects of game design that were previously foreign to the artist.

“I would love for people to experience Monet’s artwork in a different way, It’s one thing to look at his images on a screen or reprinted on an umbrella, but to run through them, to help build some of them and to look at them in a unique way is wonderful” Naoum tells Dezeen.

The game was recently launched on 28th July 2023 and is available to play on Nintendo Switch and Steam for Windows and Mac.
