What’s Brown, Strong, and 2-Dimensional? It’s Wood Drawing

Are you a longtime Abir follower? If you answered yes, then we are assured that you have read all our DIY hacks to produce gorgeous drawings and functional crafts. We have talked about paper at immense lengths, be it construction paper or cardstock. Today we go straight to the source. Not trees, but rather wood. If you have heralded yourself as a realist, you might be aware of the beauty of soft strokes and the exquisite play of light and colours to portray the true nature of the object at hand. Wood is no different. Wood isn’t simply denoted by a brown color, but rather the texture and its imperfection. Without further adieu, let’s learn simple and easy wood drawing.

How To Draw Wood?

Drawing wood is a hassle-free task. Before you even begin a wood texture drawing, you must choose the type of object you wish to draw. Do you wish to opt for a wood board drawing or a wood log drawing? Once you have chosen your desired shape, you may proceed with the following steps. Please note that the steps given below are for the wood log drawing.

  1. Draw a cylindrical log of wood. On the ellipses (the oval part of the wood), draw concentric ellipses with light strokes.
  2. Draw equidistant straight lines on the outer body of the log to represent the bark. Shake your hand a little while drawing these lines.
  3. Connect these almost parallel lines with intersecting lines. They must be reminiscent of protruding veins.
  4. Shade the inside concentric circles and the lines. Keep the pencil tilted for a more natural look.

Et Voila, the wood pencil drawing is now complete. Alternatively, if you wish to simply reproduce the wood design drawing for kids, you may follow these steps.

  1. Draw a few oblong or oval shapes. Draw imperfect curved lines around them. They will act as the tree rings.
  2. Add more curved or wavy lines around these shapes. However, do not encase these shapes. These lines should be varying thickness.
  3. If you choose to colour the pattern, you can opt for watercolour, using different hues and values of brown.

More Wood-Centric Design Ideas

Now that you have mastered the art of wood texture drawing, it’s time to incorporate your recently learned skill into other drawing ideas.

Wood Cutter Drawing

What’s better than just wood, you ask? A sweating woodcutter next to it. Try to make a wood cutter man drawing. Depict him as chopping wood. But why should you restrict your kids from having fun too? You may even attempt a fan-favourite Doraemon character Gian drawing chopping wood. Who needs an axe when you have a robust singing voice like Gian’s?
