Shashi Prabhu Architects Famous Projects
Shashi Prabhu and Associates are renowned for their creative and environmentally friendly design solutions. Each space in their varied portfolio—which includes residential, commercial, institutional, and hospitality spaces—reflects their distinct approach to design. Let’s discuss some of their famed projects.
Architecture – Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium
The Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium is one of the biggest cricket stadiums in India. Situated in Uppal, Hyderabad, the stadium complex spans 97,214 sq m and can seat 55,000 spectators. The stadium was completed in 2005 with an estimated cost of ₹68 crores. Shashi Prabhu Architects built a cricket stadium, parking lots, a swimming pool, a gym with a steam room, sauna, and jacuzzi, practice fields, a road encircling the stadium, a playing field, four spectator stands, and a compound wall with six entry gates.
Since it is close to a hillock, its naturally occurring undulating ground surface features large granite boulders. Shashi Prabhu and Associates used pre-cast concrete pieces in the construction of the spectator seating galleries. The roof’s weight is lessened as a result of Teflon fibre roofing in the north and south stands. To eliminate the rainwater issue, they built a subsurface drainage system. The mote drain also blocks people’s access to the stadium and allows unobstructed viewing without fencing.
Urban Design – Panvel Railway Station
The Panvel Railway station in Panvel, Navi Mumbai, was built by Shashi Prabhu Architects in 1998. The complex covers an area of 3,22,534.5 sq m. It was first built in the British colonial era as a small stop between Pune and Mumbai. Since its renovation, the railway station has become a busy transportation hub that has boosted the local and regional economies. It acts as a case study for how investments in transportation infrastructure and strategic planning can spur economic development and growth.
Shashi Prabhu and Associates modernized the ancient relic by building extra platforms, installing cutting-edge signalling systems, and electrifying tracks, making it eco-friendly. The 4.1-acre roof of the Panvel Railway Station uses lightweight structural membranes supported by columns. They also designed the bus depot, rickshaw stands, and public parking near the station.
Interior Design – Wankhade Stadium
In 2023, Shashi Prabhu and Associates revamped the interiors of the Wankhade Stadium. They renovated the Pressbox, President lounges, and VIP boxes to provide an unobstructed view. They used opulent wooden finishes, aluminium baffle ceilings, and premium marble & vinyl tiles with granite accents, to emphasize comfort and luxury. The VIP boxes have an open gallery design. Within this area, is a special lounge where guests can relax, mingle, and savour fine dining options while watching the game on screens.
Shashi Prabhu Architects upgraded the common restrooms by installing high-quality, long-lasting materials like gloss and anti-skid vitrified wall tiles. The design of the restroom cubicles prioritizes privacy, hygiene, and ease of maintenance. The entire Wankhade stadium uses non-porous surfaces and materials that are resistant to mould, bacteria, and moisture. These features guarantee a sterile and germ-free atmosphere.
