As Bikaner House’s Sunday Market ushered in a powerful confluence of art, spirituality, and storytelling, the audience became captivated by a beautiful performance by contemporary artist Mahima Bhayana called Raqse Ashiqaan: The Nakshatram Qala Nrityam Way. The event blended astrological dance, and tarot painting in one continuous poetic representation of love, consciousness, and energy.
The performance was inspired by the immortal love saga of Radha and Krishna and the underlying concept was to recast the dance of the couple as a transformative pilgrimage of self-discovery and resilience. Focusing on the allegorical escape from Bakasur, the artist came up with a creative interpretation on the power of overcoming adversities and converting them to opportunities. Lo and behold, Krishna, the painter of every step he takes in Vrindavan and Radha, the dancer of every move.
This unique blend of the dance and painting explored heavier themes like the gaze, perception, and how aesthetics break down ego. The performance touched upon wider horizons of how the Indian artist is perceived in contemporary spaces, and-called in the opening statement for a new pragmatic value system.
Part of the colourful Sunday Market that included the Delhi Drum Circle, a lucky draw and a puppet show on Sunday, the performance contributed a serious artistic note to the day’s events. The experience left attendees spellbound as it converted Bikaner House into a vibrant recreation of Vrindavan.
