Liverpool Cathedral to celebrate 100th anniversary with major artistic event bringing leading British Indian artist Anish Kapoor for solo exhibition On view August 10 through September 15, 2024, the exhibition is titled Monadic Singularity. The exhibition is actually Kapoor’s first-ever show in a UK cathedral and also his largest longterm solo show in Liverpool since his 1983 exhibition at the Walker Art Gallery.
A Showcase of Kapoor’s Work Spanning 25 Years
The show will present selected works spanning the past 25 years of Kapoor’s practice that bring audiences into conctact with his particular manipulations of materials and form. Key exhibits at the gallery include Sectional Body Preparing for Monadic Singularity (2015)—a large-scale sculpture never before seen in the UK. The show will also include one of Kapoor’s iconic kinetic wax sculptures, characteristic of his propensity to add a more activating or dynamic presence within an otherwise static context.
Kapoor on the Challenge and Opportunity of the Cathedral Space
Anish Kapoor explained the depth of feeling in terms of his work being placed inside Liverpool Cathedral. “Showing works at Liverpool Cathedral is always complicated,” Kapoor said in a statement. ” a space that is live in the material and spiritual. It should therefore be both resonant with strong body and the disembodied as well. The pieces that I have aligned to presented at the cathedral reside in to space between body and materiality, ground and immaterial geometry, what i will start calling here a non-object. DVD ‘My hope is that this conjunction of object and non-object up here in an immense territory, the power of space, will inspire people to confuse and somewhat subjugate religious expressions with their spiritual experience and perhaps even their humanity.
Liverpool Cathedral’s Response
Speaking of the exhibition, The Very Reverend Dr. Sue Jones, Dean of Liverpool said although she is excited and proud to display Kapoor’s work. “Our Cathedral is a home of Encounter, and as we prepare to reopen our doors for Private Prayer, we welcome all to Come-and-See this powerful new addition to the Fleet Street Scene,” she said. The exhibition is being presented in association with Culture Liverpool, the private nonprofit company Liverpool BID, Lisson Gallery, and local jewellers Boodles.
