Las Vegas: Picasso’s art fetches over $100 million
Las Vegas, USA turned into an unlikely destination for art this weekend, on October 23, after 11 Picasso paintings and other works were sold at a Sotheby\’s auction for more than $100 million. The event took place at the famous Bellagio hotel, where the works had been on display for years. It was timed so as to take place two days before the 140th birthday of the Spanish artist on October 25. The highest price was fetched by the 1938 painting ‘Femme auberet rouge-orange’ of Picasso\’s lover and muse Marie-Therese Walter, which sold for $40.5 million, some $10 million over the high pre-sale estimate. The buyers\’ names were not disclosed. The Hindu reports.
Museum starts OnlyFans account to post nude art
Vienna’s tourism board late last week launched a “Vienna Laid Bare” initiative — along with an OnlyFans account. As part of this move, a consortium of museums in the Austrian capital created the OnlyFans account to post nude artworks as part of a “new wave of prudishness” on social media platforms. It came to pass after city museums had their social media accounts suspended for uploading nude artworks — such as the TikTok account of Albertina Museum being banned for posting photographs from Japanese artist Nobuyoshi Araki depicting obscured breasts in July. Vice reveals the details.
‘More than just The Scream’ — Oslo’s mega Munch museum
More than a decade after it was first mooted, after intense political wrangling over its cost, form and location, the £235m mega museum dedicated to famous Norwegian artist Edvard Munch has come up in Oslo. The 13-storey complex houses 26,700 artworks, a mighty tribute to the tormented Norwegian artist. This is four times the amount of space than at the previous 1960s museum in Tøyen, 2km to the north-east. It is one of the largest such spaces in the world dedicated to a single artist — a “mighty mall of Munch” stacking 11 galleries connected by zigzagging escalators, crowned with a rooftop restaurant and bar. The Guardian writes about it all.
TN’s trans artists to be featured in US university’s virtual exhibition
The artworks of eight transgender (TG) artists from Tamil Nadu will soon be displayed at ‘Visibility & Remembrance: Standing with the Trans Community’, an exhibition curated by the department of women’s and gender studies, University of South Florida. The exhibition, which will be conducted both virtually and offline, will be inaugurated on November 17. Kalki Subramaniam, founder of Sahodari Foundation, whose works are also a part of the exhibition has been conducting art workshops for community members since 2017. Sahodari received an invitation from the University to submit their entries as they are one of the few organisations in Asia working with trans people that focuses on art.
