At the ongoing Venice Biennale, sculptor Sonal Ambani is showcasing the installation titled ‘Slings & Arrows of Outrageous Fortune’ that stands as a poignant reflection on the persistent gender pay gap, an issue deeply rooted in the socio-economic fabric of societies around the world. This work is part of ‘Personal Structures’ 2024 –the biennial art exhibition, organised by the European Cultural Centre (ECC), which will be on view till November 24, 2024, at Palazzo Mora.
At the heart of the installation is a stainless steel bull, featuring major world currencies. The bull, charging towards a target, represents a patriarchal structure that valorizes male hegemony. Piercing the bull’s body are red arrows that mark the efforts of those who challenge the status quo, who dare to speak against systemic biases, and who work tirelessly towards an equitable future.
The circular target the bull charges towards represents the unified goal of achieving gender equality. This circle is not merely an endpoint but a symbol of continuity and unity. It signifies the world coming full circle; a point where gender no longer determines one’s economic value or opportunity.
“This installation is also a call to action, a reminder that the collective resolve to overcome these obstacles can and will forge a more inclusive world. The sculpture stands resolute with the groundbreaking work of Nobel Laureate Claudia Goldin and celebrates her pursuit for gender equality,” says Sonal Ambani.
Sonal Ambani began her creative journey three decades ago. Her work employs various distinct stylistic elements and bridges the gap between nature & urbanization, seeking to create a delicate bond between these two diverse ecosystems. Sonal’s sculptures challenge the viewer to create their meaning by reflecting upon their own life experiences. She believes that art needs to find a balance between visual elegance and intrinsic contemplation. Her sculpture ‘Riderless World’ was also a part of ‘Personal Structures’ at the Venice 2022 Art Biennale.
‘Personal Structures’ has emerged as a vital artistic dialogue, transcending borders and reflecting the complexities of our interconnected world. The show brings together more than 300 artists and multidisciplinary creatives from different countries, as it seeks to provide a rich tapestry of perspectives on the pressing challenges of our time.
