‘Don Gummer isperhaps best known for his constructivist sculptures, powerfully graceful, ascending creations of bronze and steel. But his considerable body of work also comprises painted wood wall reliefs, collages, drawings, monochrome encaustic painting, watercolours, and earthworks incorporating rock, soil and water. Even the most cursory, if supremely confident, initial sketch for a free-standing sculpture shows the ground and a horizon, immediately placing the form in space and then capturing it through the agency of two- dimensional characters.
